Municipal Complex talks renewed

A bond referendum is a likely possibility as city officials restart talk and set a course of action on Starkville’s nearly 10-year-old consideration of a Municipal Complex.
A city panel involved in the discussion comprised of Ward 5 Alderman Jeremiah Dumas, Ward 6 Alderman Roy A’. Perkins, Chief Administrative Officer Lynn Spruill and Mayor Parker Wiseman met Thursday to formulate a plan for moving forward.
Ward 4 Alderman Richard Corey was unable to attend the meeting.

Man faces trial on fondling charges

A Starkville man has been indicted on charges of child fondling and sexual battery in connection with a series of incidents involving children ranging in age from 3 to 14.
David Parrish, 26, was arraigned Thursday morning in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court on two counts of child fondling and one count of sexual battery.
He remains jailed under a hold placed on him by Corrections Department officers, who are seeking to have his post-release supervision from a prior narcotics conviction revoked.

Cast members of Starkville Community Theatre’s summer musical revue, “The A, B, C’s of Broadway,” prove that jazz hands never go out of style in choreography in a high-energy number from the production. Those hoping to score tickets to the show will find themselves out of luck. As of Thursday afternoon, the last available seats for the show, which concludes its two-weekend run at the Playhouse on Main Saturday night, had been sold out.

EPA gives MSU million dollar grant

Mississippi State University’s leadership with vehicle technology that promotes air quality, improved fuel economy and emissions reductions will be recognized during a special event on campus Aug. 5.
The Environmental Protection Agency will award the land-grant institution’s Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems a $1.08 million grant as part of the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program.

Dancing in the Park set Saturday

It was a huge coincidence that worked out perfectly.
Kayla Gilmore of KMG Creations Dance and Fitness, LLC, had planned Saturday’s “Dancing in the Park with the “main objective is to expose different genres of dance, promote the arts and promote fitness for everyone.”
“I thought I would do something to help Mississippi with a crisis of unhealthy and obese people, especially with youth,” Gilmore said. “I am trying so hard to alert people about healthy living because it could combat many diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and others.”

Reminder: Rally Promo Day Saturday

In just three weeks, thousands of motorcycles will descend on western Oktibbeha County for the annual Sturgis South All-Bike Motorcycle Rally, but those looking to get a jump on registration for the weekend-long event can do so this Saturday.
Promo Day for the 14th annual Rally is set from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in downtown Sturgis. The Rally will be held from Aug. 19 to 22.

The big city budget dilemma

One major dilemma is facing Starkville officials as they prepare the municipal government budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year: Do they try to move forward with projects identified in their strategic plan or tow the line in keeping expenses down?
That’s something the full Board of Aldermen will have to weigh when it convenes for a budget work session in the coming weeks.

Festival of Trees tickets

Festival of Trees 2010 is scheduled for November 12 – 19 at the Palmeiro Center on the campus of Mississippi State University.
Some of this year’s events will include: Preview Party, Ladies Night, Cookies with Santa, and the Holiday Party.
This year event organizers will also be offering ticket packages: Girls Night Out Package includes one Ladies Night ticket, one preview party ticket and one Holiday Party ticket for $75, Date Night package includes two preview party tickets and two Holiday Party tickets $ 115.

JA's 'Stuff the Bus' to help students

It’s back to school time in Oktibbeha County, and for the Junior Auxiliary, that means it’s time for the annual Stuff the Bus event.
“The purpose of this event is to serve as many children as possible with the funds available,” said Robin Parker, Child Assistance Committee Chair. “Historically this has involved making essential school supplies available to children at the beginning of the school year when those children have been referred by school counselors... It is one of our most important projects because we are able to fill an immediate need of children in our schools.”
