Lady Wolverines blank Lady Tigers in softball

MABEN – The Hatley Lady Tigers tried to shake up East Webster pitcher Bailie Springfield on Friday.
One thing that the Lady Tigers didn't take into account was that Springfield doesn't get rattled very easily.
Springfield went the distance in the circle and tossed a one-hit shutout as East Webster won an 8-0 decision over Hatley at home in Cumberland.

Mississippi State falls below .500 with loss to LSU

Mississippi State is in a place it hasn't been before this season.
The Bulldogs are under .500.
State saw its record slip to 23-24 with a 11-4 loss to No. 1 LSU Friday night as the Tigers clinched the three-game Southeastern Conference series – the ninth straight series win for LSU over MSU – at Dudy Noble Field.

Willie Bennett Moore

Willie Bennett Moore, 73, passed away on April 30, 2015 at Darlington Oaks in Verona, MS.  He was a ready mix operator with MMC Materials and a member of Chester Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver B. and Ola Moore; sister, Gertrude Schantz; and brother, Curtis Moore.

Jackets compete at North 6A track meet

The Starkville Yellowjackets have 16 spots covered during Saturday's Class 6A North State meet in Madison.
There are SHS girls involved in 13 events, while the Jackets are participating in three events.

East Webster beats Baldwyn in baseball

The East Webster Wolverines forced a third and deciding game in their Class 2A playoffs series with Baldwyn on Friday with a 13-2 road victory.
The two teams will meet again today at 1 p.m. in Cumberland to decide which will advance to the next round.
East Webster took a 6-1 lead and continued to add to that total for the rest of the game, while the pitching held the Bearcats in check.

FUNdamentals of Fitness to build athletic foundations

Starting next Tuesday, Trinity Fitness will start the FUNdamentals of Fitness program to provide an athletic foundation for children.
The classes will meet twice a week from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. for ages 8 to 10-year-olds and 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. for ages 11 to 13-year-olds. The fee per child is $100.

Arts council hosts city’s first art walk

Downtown Starkville will see an explosion of creativity on Saturday as Starkville Area Arts Council hosts Starkville’s first Art Walk on Main Street from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Twenty local artists will display, demonstrate and sell their artwork inside Main Street businesses as well as along the sidewalks during the day.

MSU drops 14-inning marathon to No. 1 LSU

Mississippi State had several chances to to knock off No. 1 LSU.
The Bulldogs just didn't get the job done.
Conner Hale had a two-run double in the top of the 14th inning and the Tigers beat MSU 5-3 to survive a scare at Dudy Noble Field.
The Bulldogs (23-23, 7-15) had runners in scoring position in the ninth, 10th, 11th and 13th innings, but didn't do enough to push the winning run across.

Wolverines fall to Bearcats in baseball

MABEN – The East Webster Wolverines ran into a tough customer to deal with in Baldwyn pitcher Ryan Wesson on Thursday night in Cumberland.
Wesson threw a complete-game two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and the Bearcats defeated East Webster 7-2 in the first game of a second-round Class 2A playoff series.
