MSU recovers to beat Arkansas in game two

March 30, 2014

Mississippi State had not scored in 14 innings entering the bottom of the sixth inning in game two of a doubleheader against Arkansas on Saturday.
The Bulldog offense corrected that.
No. 16 MSU scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to beat the Razorbacks 5-1 to split the twin bill at Dudy Noble Field.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs ran up against a tough pair of lefthanded pitchers in the first game of a doubleheader against Arkansas on Saturday.
Jalen Beeks and Michael Gunn of the Razorbacks scattered 10 hits and shut out the 16th-ranked Bulldogs 4-0 at Dudy Noble Field.

Prescott: MSU offense has success in scrimmage

Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen has seen his defense dominate the offense through the first two weeks of spring camp.
On Saturday, the offense had some good fortune.
The Bulldogs scored nine offensive touchdowns in a scrimmage at Davis Wade Stadium, which was the first such scrimmage of the spring.

Bulldogs pick up pair of shutouts

For every strikeout at the Mississippi State softball field, a free t-shirt is thrown out into the crowd.
On Saturday, the odds of getting one of those shirts was pretty good as in two games Alison Owen and Alexis Silkwood combined for 23 strikeouts.
The outstanding pitching provided more than giveaways, it also led to a doubleheader sweep of Marshall 4-0 and 2-0.

Mississippi State fans will be in for a surprise when they step into Davis Wade Stadium to watch the Maroon-White Spring Game.
For the past two years, Davis Wade Stadium has been in the process of being expanded and it is nearing the end of the construction phase.

Bulldogs have experience returning at cornerback spot

Mississippi State had many question marks about the secondary coming into last season.
There were going to be many new faces, especially at cornerback.
After roughing it out last season, the cornerback position returns with a good bit of experience.
Junior Taveze Calhoun finished off the season hot, as he has several interceptions down the stretch.

A VALUABLE PIECE: Alwal contributes to MSU's cause on defense, offense

There's no denying the value of Martha Alwal on defense for the Mississippi State women's basketball team.
The junior center from Worthington, Minn., already owns the career blocks record for the Bulldogs with 257 and on Thursday against Auburn, she set the single-season mark with her 97th swat.

SHS caps week with another win

It's been a good week for the Starkville High School tennis team.
After defeated East Webster to start the week on Monday, the Yellowjackets recorded another home win of 5-2 over St. Aloysius on Friday afternoon.
SHS tennis coach Rob Fyke doesn't know any better way to prepare for the looking Class 6A, Region 3 competition than to play as many matches as possible.

Young Vols improve during time on court

The Starkville Academy Volunteers may be young, but that is not going to stop them from standing strong each time they take the court.
“I want them to improve,” SA coach Lynn Moorehead said. “I want them to be competitive. This year our goal is to be competitive, (get to) North State and to be able to compete with the kids who are there. We are able to do that.”

New league being organized

There will be a new youth basketball league coming to Starkville in June.
The Mississippi Basketball Athletes league, organized by Fred Tate, will give the youth of the community another opportunity to participate in the game.
