Johnston embraces role as SHS leader

There are certain defensive players that fit the label as the quarterback of that side of the football.
For the Starkville Yellowjackets, linebacker Taylor Johnston fits that description.
Johnston has filled that role well for the Jackets during the last three seasons.

Mullen wants consistency out of MSU defense

Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen would like to see a little more consistency out of his defense.
The Bulldogs played great in spurts against Auburn last Saturday, but at times broke down.
The Tigers scored on a 76-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Quan Bray was wide open after cornerback Justin Cox got tangled up.

SEC victories very precious, MSU lost one

The Mississippi State defense forced three turnovers against Auburn last Saturday.
That's good.
The Bulldogs did not have a turnover offensively.
That's great.
MSU lost to Auburn 24-20 to open the Southeastern Conference schedule and fell to 1-2 overall.
That's bad.

SHS beats Heritage in three sets

The last time Starkville High faced Heritage Academy in volleyball, the Lady Patriots walked away with the win.
This time things were different as the Lady Yellowjackets defeated Heritage Academy in three-straight sets 25-19, 25-17 and 25-9.

MSU determines abduction attempt hoax

Mississippi State University has determined that a female student falsely reported an attempted abduction to university police on Wednesday.
Mississippi State Dean of Students Thomas Bourgeois said in a university release that the student has withdrawn her account of the initial report to university police.

Final budget on board agenda - Mayor, board raises also on tap

A long city budget process for fiscal year 2014 that’s seen plenty of discussion, and at least one major adjustment, could end this evening as Starkville’s Board of Aldermen considers a final draft of its proposed budget.

The board will meet at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

It has the longest aircraft runway east of the Mississippi River. It has a history that predates World War II. It trains about one-third of the pilots for the U.S. Air Force, and it's only about 30 miles away from Starkville.
