SMITH COLUMN: EMCC plays entire game to take win

There were many big plays during Saturday's MACJC playoff game between the East Mississippi Community College Lions and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs.
The biggest play may have been by the GCCC band at halftime.
For some reason, the visiting band felt the need to include the song "We are the Champions" as part of its halftime routine.

Hebron takes care of business, makes playoffs

There was a scenario that existed for the Hebron Christian Eagles on Friday night that if they had lost by a certain score, they would be left out of the postseason.
Even with taking a 3-0 mark into a road game against Calhoun Academy, everything the Eagles had done could have been for nothing with a bad outing in Calhoun City.

Eupora beats East Webster: Kickoff return big for Eagles during victory

MABEN – After Eupora's lead had been cut to 21-18, head coach Junior Graham decided to change things up on the kickoff.
Instead of running the kickoff up the sideline, he decided to run a wedge in the middle.
It worked.
Chance Cooper took the kickoff 95 yards to start a 14-0 run, as the Eagles went on to beat rival East Webster 35-18 to earn a playoff berth. 

Wolverines able to fight until the end

MABEN – Rivalry games take on a life of their own.
Action goes back and forth. Teams get hyped more than with any other game and excitement simply flows throughout.

Jackets edged by Vikings 12-9

VICKSBURG – The Starkville Yellowjackets saw their hopes at a Class 6A, Region 2 championship dashed Friday night with a last-second field goal by Warren Central.
Jade Pollock nailed a 31-yard attempt with less than 10 seconds remaining as the homestanding Vikings defeated the Jackets 12-9.

Volunteers fall hard to Raiders on road

JACKSON – The Starkville Academy Volunteers found the going tough in the capital city Friday night and dropped a 49-3 decision to the Jackson Academy Raiders.
With the loss, Starkville Academy saw its overall record fall to 3-7.

Bulldogs focus on Gamecocks

The second half of football games, especially the fourth quarter, have not been kind to the Mississippi State Bulldogs lately.
Through seven games, the Bulldogs have scored 163 points in the first half. They have just scored 48 in the second and half and only 17 in the fourth quarter.

Housing project plans underway

Ramsey Partners of Starkville rescinded its rezoning application Thursday for a 486-acre residential/retail development on South Montgomery, City Planner Buddy Sanders confirmed. But that has far from ended the firm’s plans to bring the development to fruition.

Police seeking drive-by suspect

Starkville Police Department is searching for a suspect in connection with a reported Thursday morning drive-by shooting in the Henderson Hill area.

Police are searching for Deangelo Dewayne Manning, who an SPD press release described as an 18-year-old, 6-foot, 184-pound black male. Manning’s last known address is 406 Hancock Circle in Starkville.
