Mississippi State takes momentum to Georgia

The Mississippi State men's basketball team is looking to do something they have not done in three years.

The Bulldogs (6-7, 1-0) look to open the Southeastern Conference season with a 2-0 record when they travel to Athens, Ga., to take on Georgia (6-8, 0-1) today.

Tip is set for 12:47 p.m. inside Stegeman Coliseum for the battle of the Bulldogs.

MSU loses lead late, falls to Florida 61-55

The Mississippi State Bulldogs had a lead against the Florida Gators in the second half of their Southeastern Conference game Thursday night.

Then they ran into Bonds - Jaterra Bonds.

Bonds, who finished the game with 17 points, hit a basket and two free throws with the Bulldogs leading 52-51 and the Gators went on to a 61-55 victory at Humphrey Coliseum.

Jackson to return to MSU for senior year

Mississippi State junior offensive lineman Gabe Jackson announced Thursday that he was going to return for his senior season.

The 6-foot-4 320-pound offensive guard from Liberty received feedback from the NFL Draft Advisory Board in December, but decided it was in his best interest to return to the Bulldogs.

Local kennel club hosts annual dog competition

The Golden Triangle Kennel Club welcomes hundreds of canine enthusiasts with its annual dog show Saturday and Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Mississippi State University Horse Park.

GTKC President Nancy Boden said entries increased for this year’s competition with approximately 600 participants scheduled to attend.

Saturday marks end of absentee voting

Saturday is the last day Oktibbeha County voters within state Senate Dist. 16 can cast absentee ballots in the special election to fill the late Miss. Sen. Bennie Turner’s seat.

Keenum reveals new scholarship for STAR students

Mississippi State University President Mark Keenum used the Mississippi Economic Council’s annual Capital Day meeting in Jackson as a platform to announce a $6,000 scholarship paid over four years for each student-winner in MEC’s Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program.

Mr. John Henry Davis, 84, died Dec. 31, 2012 at his residence in Starkville.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Jan. 12, 2013 at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Starkville with Rev. Lee Brand Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery in Starkville.

TULARE, Calif. — Mrs. Joyce Joy was born on Sept. 24, 1931 to James and Thursa Solomon of Oklahoma.

Memorials services will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013 at Church of Christ in Tulare, Calif.
A private family burial will follow.
Miller's Tulare Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She worked as an accountant for several school districts over the years.

UPDATE: Officials confirm 3 deaths from fire

Officials confirmed Thursday three people died during a Wednesday blaze, including a volunteer firefighter with District 5 Fire Department.
According to Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Department, the deceased are 92-year-old Celia Craig Robson, her grandson, 23-year-old Samuel Razi Morris and 48-year-old Geraldine Bradford Rice.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Finding a way to win: MSU defeats South Carolina in SEC opener

The Mississippi State men's basketball team refused to go away quietly. 

The Bulldogs (6-7, 1-0) trailed South Carolina (10-4, 0-1) for most of Wednesday night, but were able to pull out a 56-54 victory at Humphrey Coliseum in the opening game of the Southeastern Conference portion of the schedule.
