Vols' Slaughter, Henderson set to attend MCC

Athletes in the sport of soccer are instructed not to use their hands unless they are a goalkeeper or throw the ball in from out of bounds.

On Friday morning, Starkville Academy soccer players Zach Slaughter and Colby Henderson were encouraged to use their hands.

Slaughter and Henderson took a pen and signed their names to continue their soccer careers at Meridian Community College.

Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt confirmed 23-year-old Deseane K. Robinson of 2011 Williams Road in Starkville died after a two-car head-on collision on Louisville Street early Friday morning.

Williams calls for Unity Park talks

A public meeting will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Oktibbeha County Courthouse Annex to address residents’ concerns over Unity Park.

District 5 Supervisor Joe Williams will moderate the discussion, which he said could lead to the nomination of a local civil rights and education pioneer to be featured on one of the park’s blank plaques.

House member files bill to join school systems

Starkville School District officials confirmed trustees and Superintendent Lewis Holloway will travel to Jackson today to discuss a Miss. House bill which calls for the consolidation of Oktibbeha County school districts.

Family important for the Crawfords at West Oktibbeha

For Dantaveous Crawford and his coach Danny Crawford, who also happens to be his uncle, basketball runs deep, so deep that the pair made a pact to only discuss the game when inside the gym.

SCS Cougars hold on to get 69-65 victory

The Starkville Christian School Cougars could have given up to the pressure when the visiting Immanuel Christian Rams came back from a huge deficit to tie Thursday night's game.

However, the Cougars had worked too hard to establish a lead to let the Rams leave Starkville with a victory.

Texas A&M hands MSU 81-33 defeat

It's hard to get much going offensively when a team cannot hold onto the basketball.

On Thursday night, the Mississippi State women's basketball team struggled scoring and gave the opposition plenty of opportunities.

MSU (8-11, 0-6) fell to the No. 16 (Associated Press) Texas A&M Aggies (15-5, 5-1) 81-33 inside Humphrey Coliseum in a Southeastern Conference matchup.

Starkville Academy falls to Jackson Prep at home

Despite excellent individual performances, the Starkville Academy Volunteers were not able to fend off Jackson Prep as the Volunteers fell 4-0 on the soccer field.

Mrs. Mary Ella Watt, 77, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 at her residence in Crawford.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at Pine Grove M.B. Church in Starkville with Rev. Charles Brown officiating.
Burial will follow at Public Cemetery in Starkville.
Visitation will be held 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at West Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
