The first factory in the United States began after George Washington became President. According to U.S.http://www.history.org, in 1790, Samuel Slater, a cotton spinner's apprentice who left England the year before with the secrets of textile machinery, built a factory from memory to produce spindles of yarn.

Heather and Trey Skaggs of Columbus are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Anna Joy Skaggs, on Jan. 8, 2013 at OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville. She weighed 6 lbs. 9 oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long.

Maternal grandparents are Melita and Tommy Tomlinson of Starkville.

Welcoming Anna home was big brother Jones Edward Skaggs.

Joseph W. and Tiffany K. Butler of Hawk Point, Mo. would like to announce the birth of their first child, Melody Ann Butler. She was born at home on Jan. 17, 2013 at 3:23 a.m. She weighed 7 lbs. and was 19 inches long.

Her grandparents are Jerry and Tina Burney of Warrenton, Mo., Christina Kendrick of Omaha, Neb., and Jim and Heidi Butler of Millerton, Pa.

Lady Vols rally for basketball victory

JACKSON – Intense is the only way to describe the action taking place in Jackson Academy’s gym on Friday afternoon.

All records were put aside and previous games did not matter as Starkville Academy and Presbyterian Christian School tipped off.

Things were tight all game long, but in the end, the Lady Volunteers pulled off a very close 40-37 victory.

Starkville opens baseball season with win over Leake Central

FLOWOOD – The Starkville Yellowjackets competed in the Class 4A-5A-6A State Tournament on Friday and finished seventh overall.

The event was held at Fannin Lanes in Flowood.

“We had an outstanding season,” SHS coach Jim Philamlee said. “I am real pleased with how things progressed.”
