Homestead exemption filing deadline April 1

The deadline to file homestead exemptions is April 1, and Oktibbeha County Tax Assessor Allen Morgan said he encouraged everyone who qualified to stop by the county court house to file or refile so they could receive exemptions from ad valorem property taxes.

TVA set to begin right of way work

In 2003, a blackout engulfed the northeastern United States.
John Dooley, vegetation manager for the western district of TVA’s coverage area, said this blackout affected 50 million people, led to 11 deaths, and cost an estimated $6 billion. There were initial fears that the blackout resulted from a terrorist attack, he said, but its actual point of origin turned out to be a single downed tree.

Outages necessary for TVA project

On the heels of Tennessee Valley Authority representatives' announcement that it planned to connect a new transmission line to Starkville this summer, two dates have been announced when power outages will take place so the company can complete its part of the project.

Bulldogs battle back to defeat the Braves

March 20, 2013

The Mississippi State baseball team didn't look like a team that had just come off a dominating performance over a fellow Southeastern Conference team.
The No. 14 (Collegiate Baseball) Bulldogs found themselves down early to the Alcorn State Braves, but managed to mount a comeback and a 7-6 win Tuesday night.

Bessie (Fillingame) Williams

Bessie LaDell Williams, 73, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.

LaDell (Fillingame) Williams is survived by her husband, Hardy L. Williams, son, Michael Alan Williams Sr. of Gulfport; two daughters, Pamela Dell Lombardo of Pass Christian,, Sandra Lee Kelley of Bells, Texas; six grandchildren; and sister, Myrtis E. Lunceford of Vicksburg.

Larry McKibben

Larry Nathan McKibben, 18, passed away in an automobile accident on March 16, 2013.  He was a student at East Mississippi Community College.  

Sarah Dodd

March 20, 2013

Sarah Johnson Dodd, 74, passed away on March 17, 2013 at OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville.  She was a homemaker and member of First Presbyterian Church in Starkville, where she served as a deacon and elder and was very active in visiting the shut-ins of First Presbyterian Church.  She received her bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University. 

Yellowjackets, Vols face each other on court

Starkville was treated to a new event on Tuesday.
For the first time, Starkville Academy and Starkville High School broke out the yellow balls and rackets to face each other in tennis.
