Robinson camp to focus on life as well as football

William Robinson was looking for someone to be the face of a camp to teach young boys the skills of life along with football.
He decided to turn to his good friend with the same name William Robinson, but this happens to be former Mississippi State quarterback William "Sleepy" Robinson.

SSD board president ready to be roasted

At first, Eddie Myles needed to be reminded what a comedy roast was.

Myles is president Starkville School District’s Board of Trustees, director of the Wellness Connection at OCH Regional Medical Center and a deacon at Second Baptist Church. Between those roles, he said, he hardly has time for TV, so he hasn’t seen televised celebrity roasts.

Manning granted reprieve

After transferring to a new holding cell, eating his presumed last meals and making final phone calls on Tuesday, Willie Jerome Manning, of Starkville, received a stay of execution from the Mississippi Supreme Court a mere four hours before his scheduled execution.

Local sentenced on child porn charge

May 8, 2013

Two years after his initial arrest by the Mississippi Attorney General’s office, John A. Brown, 62, of Starkville, pleaded guilty to one count possession of child pornography Monday in the Oktibbeha County Circuit Court.

Chad Garnett, OCSD chief deputy sheriff, said the arrest came in 2011 following an investigation by Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood’s office.

Two alderman race too close to call pending affidavits

A primary election night that left two alderman wards in limbo also produced an easy victory for Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman.

Wiseman, a one-term incumbent, easily defeated democratic challenger Mary Lee Beal by a 1,763 to 963 margin in Tuesday’s primary, according to unofficial totals. Wiseman will face Republican Dan Moreland in the June 4 general election.

Charles Richard Orr I, age 78, of Starkville, Mississippi, died on May 7, 2013 at his daughter’s home in Seagrove, NC after a long battle with cancer. Family visitation will be held Friday evening, May 10, 6:30-8:30 PM at London Funeral Home in Lewisburg, TN, with funeral services at 11 AM on Saturday, May 11. Burial will follow at Temple Cemetery in Farmington, TN.

Ted Hoyt, 41 of Columbus, MS passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013 at his mother’s home in Columbus, MS after fighting a brave battle with brain cancer.

Bulldogs play for positioning in SEC, NCAA Tournament

The college baseball regular season is coming down the homestretch and there is still a lot to be decided.
The Southeastern Conference Tournament seeds are no where close to being set in stone. The No. 24 (Collegiate Baseball) Mississippi State Bulldogs (36-13, 13-11) are trying to solidify their position in the SEC Tournament, as well as, in the NCAA Tournament.

Indians eliminated by Hornets

ACKERMAN – The Loyd Star Hornets stood between the Ackerman Indians and advancement in the Class 2A playoffs.
With the series tied 1-1, the pair of high school baseball teams faced off on Tuesday and at the end, it was the Hornets who moved one step ahead in the playoffs following their 10-5 victory.
