After a 28-year run with the Starkville Fire Department, ladder truck No. 2 will hang up its hoses. The department welcomed its replacement Wednesday, a new custom-built engine complete with a 75-foot aluminum ladder, a more modernized and easily serviceable puc pump, and dual foam capabilities for combating standard fires and those involving accelerants.
The Boy Scouts of America voted last Thursday to end a policy forbidding openly gay youth from participating in its ranks.
More than 1,400 volunteer leaders from across the country voted on the issue. Of them, more than 60 percent approved the policy change.

Mr. Hulon Arthur Morgan, 84 of Maben, MS, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, May 28, 2013.
He was very passionate about his music. He played in the Maben Church of God Band.Â He also played lead guitar for Morgan Davis Family.
As a sophomore, Adam Frazier put his name on the map for Mississippi State.
In his junior season, the shortstop is picking up right where he left off in all facets of the game.
The Bishop, Ga. native led MSU with .371 batting average last season, on his way to becoming one of the mainstays in the lineup.
"You always want to be confident and want to do your best," Frazier said.
Mississippi State junior outfielder Hunter Renfroe was putting pressure on himself to perform last week at the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
While sitting in his Hoover, Ala., hotel room, Renfroe was saying to himself, "I've got to get hits."
That's when teammate Wes Rea stepped up and told Renfroe to "calm down and relax."
Luis Pollorena worked is way into the Friday night roll for Mississippi State during Southeastern Conference play.
He proved that he could be a valuable starter in game one of series and set the tone for the rest of the weekend.
MATHISTON â€“ Blue Mountain College is looking to build its baseball program and coach Curt Fowler can't think of any better way to do it than with an athlete like East Webster's Cody McKee.
McKee, who signed with the Hilltoppers on Wednesday afternoon, combined an excellent skill as a catcher along with a high academic standard for the Wolverines, which was something that impressed Fowler.
