Fire ants pose nuisance throughout Mississippi

As summer returns, so does an infamous pest.

Fire ants are a well-known nuisance throughout Mississippi and the rest of the South. Richard Linley, owner of Northeast Exterminating services, said ants tend to be a seasonal issue.

‘Breadwinner moms’ study resonates

On May 29, the Pew Research Center released a study of U.S. Census Bureau data, titled “Breadwinner Moms,” saying mothers are the sole or primary income source for a record 40 percent of all households with children under the age of 18, up from 11 percent in 1960.

Firefighters train on new ladder truck

Firefighters with the Starkville Fire Department are learning the ins and outs of the city’s new ladder truck technology this week. Chief Rodger Mann said the crew would begin training today on the truck’s operations and pump system. The city obtained the new truck on May 29, a replacement for the 28-year-old Engine No. 2.

The Starkville School District Board of Trustees will consider approving a $9.95 million bond for facility maintenance projects at its meeting at 6 p.m. today at the Greensboro Center.

Alice Gray Black, 75, of Sturgis, MS; passed away at her residence on Monday, June 10, 2013 surrounded by her family.

Alice was member of Morgan chapel Baptist church, a homemaker and retired with Hershede Hall Clock Company and Starkville Manor, where she had worked for 11 years.  She loved children.

OMAHA BOUND: MSU holds onto lead to put away Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Mississippi State was six outs away from the College World Series, but rain forced the Bulldogs to wait another day to record the last few outs.
The No. 12 (Collegiate Baseball) Bulldogs came back Monday afternoon after rain suspended game two of the Charlottesville Super Regional to beat the No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers 6-5 at Davenport Field to advance to Omaha, Neb.

Bulldogs make ninth appearance in CWS

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Mississippi State's first appearance in the College World Series came in 1971. 
The Bulldogs will return in 2013 for the ninth time. 

MSU's Frazier gets eight hits in two games

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Adam Frazier came into the Charlottesville Super Regional with 94 hits and ninth on the Mississippi State single-season hit career list.
The sixth round Pittsburgh Pirates draft pick went 8-for-11 over the weekend as the No. 12 (Collegiate Baseball) Bulldogs beat the No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers 6-5 Monday afternoon to move on to the College World Series.

Volunteers to face tough opponents on 2013 football slate

There's excitement in the voice of Starkville Academy football coach Jeff Terrill about the upcoming schedule.
While this year’s slate of games is certainly no easy task for the Volunteers, who are a relatively young squad, the Starkville Academy staff is encouraged heading into the season.
“There are no breaks week to week and I think it is even tougher than last year,” Terrill said.

Jackets expect test from 2013 football schedule

There won't many breathers from Friday to Friday for the Starkville Yellowjackets during the 2013 football season and that's just the way head coach Jamie Mitchell wants it.
Mitchell is excited about the venues, environments and competition that moving into Class 6A brings with it and the non-division schedule also.
