SSD board to consider TAN, update policies

September 10, 2013

The Starkville School District Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting today at 6 p.m. in the Greensboro Center.

The board will have to consider a number of agenda items, including approval of a Tax Anticipation Note, or TAN, to help pay expenses until the district’s tax revenues allocated in the budget begin coming in.

Homeward Bound Project receives new transfer vehicle

Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine's Homeward Bound Project of Mississippi has saved more than 3,200 dogs since it began in 2007, transporting puppies and dogs from shelters in the South to shelters in the Northeast where adoption was guaranteed. Recently, the program purchased a van to ease the process of transporting the animals.

Funeral services for Lillian Margaret Dalton Boone, 84, of Starkville will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, September 10 at First Presbyterian Church, Starkville. She entered the gates of Heaven on September 7, 2013.  Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 10 in Leland-Stoneville Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Leland.

Info please? MSU's Mullen has had tough time scouting Auburn in past

Since coach Dan Mullen arrived at Mississippi State, he hasn't had a ton of information available to prepare for Auburn.
The Tigers (2-0) have featured a good bit of turnover with coaches and key personnel. Mullen and his Bulldogs (1-1) will get to see those new additions when they travel to Auburn Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff on ESPN2.

Sometimes a Bulldog receiver can rush the football at times.
MSU players at the skilled positions are often asked to multi-task and it's all for the good of the team.

Lady Vols drop outing in softball

Kayla Mosley says her Starkville Academy softball team is “taking steps forward,” but unfortunately the Lady Volunteers just can not “put it all together” during a game.
Monday afternoon they gave up a 14-1 contest to a tough Washington School.

In 2009, Congress designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. With the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 this week, the Starkville community will honor local first responders throughout the week with numerous activities.

It's said of many that they live with drive. Those who know Joyce Ellenwood say hers is more a life in drive.

Taking the reins as executive director for both the Starkville and Columbus Boys and Girls clubs in 2011, Ellenwood is known for her effectiveness, whether it's dealing directly with club programs or talking to others about the club's vitality.

Status remains unclear: Availability of MSU's Russell depends on report from the doctor

The status of Mississippi State quarterback Tyler Russell for this week against Auburn is still in the air.
The senior missed the home opener for the Bulldogs against Alcorn State on Saturday, a 51-7 victory, due to a concussion he suffered in week one against Oklahoma State.
Sophomore backup signal caller Dak Prescott stepped in and got his first career start.

SA, French Camp schedule a time to play in October

It is not often the high school football schedule changes after the season gets underway, but that very thing has taken place for French Camp Academy and Starkville Academy.
