Cecil Clinton Gray, Sr.

August 26, 2013

Cecil Clinton Gray, Sr. of Starkville proudly wore his gold jersey with the black No. 46. He was a football player for Starkville High School and served in the Navy. He did beautiful cabinets and worked at the Starkville Daily News as a route carrier. He requested his body be given to science, with no funeral or memorial.

The kickoff for Bulldogs days away

The college football is not months away and not weeks away.
Rather it is days and just a few short hours away. 
Mississippi State's season starts this Saturday in Houston, Tex. when it takes on the No. 13 (Associated Press) Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Mullen and his team have been anxiously awaiting this game since the end of last season.

Starkville, Oxford play for Little Egg

A new tradition is starting to take shape on the campuses of Starkville and Oxford High Schools.
As the football teams at the respective schools take to the field this Friday night, it will be for more than just a regular season win. It will be for the Little Egg Bowl.
Mississippi State and Ole Miss battle annually in the college version of the Egg Bowl, or the Battle for the Golden Egg.

Philamlee pleased with response at SHS tryouts

The rosters for the Starkville High School bowling team are set and coach Jim Philamlee believes he has the right mix to continue the program in the right direction.
Returning to the Yellowjackets are four out of five players that helped the unit win the regional championship last season.

FLOWOOD – Starkville High School opened the 2013 swim season in impressive fashion on Saturday as the boys placed first and the girls second at the Hartfield Invitational.

Local students accepted into Interlochen

Steven Trinkle has moved all over the Southeast, but it’s the move to Interlochen, Mich., on Wednesday that will be the biggest one of all. Trinkle will finish his high school career at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan.

Lightsey finds several avenues to serve

Cherri Lightsey has worn several hats over the years, and through many of them, she's worked to make an impact in the community.

Martha Ruth Parvin, a longtime friend, said Lightsey had worked with Habitat for Humanity, helped with fundraisers for needy patients at OCH Regional Medical Center and helped to mentor children, among other things.

Bulldogs see fair share of injuries

Coach Dan Mullen has seen his Mississippi State team experience its share of injuries during training camp this fall.
The Bulldogs have had a number of his skilled players suffer minor to big injuries.
Junior tight end Malcolm Johnson has been touch and go with an undisclosed injury since before classes got back underway last Monday. 

Sullivan gets milestone in MSU win

There's no hiding the impact a player has on a team when they have 64 career points.
Mississippi State senior Elisabeth Sullivan was able to reach that mark in soccer to set the school record on Sunday and the Bulldogs shut out the Arkansas State Red Wolves 5-0 at the MSU Soccer Field.
Getting a milestone in a winning effort was very satisfying for Sullivan.

Starkville Academy begins season at Choctaw Trails

The Starkville Academy cross country team is ready to hit the ground running.
“I am excited about them this year,” Volunteers coach Nancy Christiansen said. “We started practicing early on and are ready to see where we stack up at real competition.”
