Carolyn Falk Katz died on Tuesday, 6/25, 2013, in Houston, Texas at the age of 85. 

Born in New Orleans on 8/13/27, she grew up in Kosciusko and Jackson, MS, the daughter of Amos Falk, a cotton merchant, and Edna Stiebel Falk. 

She attended Millsaps College in Jackson for two years, leaving school to work at the phone company after her father died.

Bradberry's successful run as coach lands him in MAC Hall

David Bradberry's successful run as a high school football coach in Mississippi has taken him from Sturgis to the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame.
The Oktibbeha County native will be inducted along with four others on Friday during the MAC Hall of Fame banquet in Jackson.
When Bradberry thinks about the accomplishment, he looks back on the people that have helped him get there.

Buckner teaches 9-year-olds how to value, love the game

To Starkville’s 9-year old All-Star coach, baseball is about much more than hitting a ball with a bat.
“I want them to learn that baseball is a great sport,” coach Robert Buckner said. “It can teach you to overcome because you get up to the plate and you are going to strike out some. You are going to miss a ball. You are going to make a mistake and the same thing happens in life.

Starkville 11 All-Stars are familiar team

This year’s 11-year-old Starkville All-Star team is quite familiar with each other.
Not only have the All-Stars been playing against and with each other all season, but the last few years, they have been pretty much the same team.
“We have a pretty good group,” coach Randy Carlisle said. “These kids have played together since they were 7."

SSD starts teacher mentoring program

Starkville School District adopted a budget for the 2013-14 school year at a Tuesday evening board of education meeting.

The budget was unchanged from the one presented at a budget hearing a week prior to the meeting. The budget will allow the district $45.6 million in expenditures and $46.48 million in revenue.

Partnership seeking new Chamber VP

One month after former Chamber of Commerce Vice President Austin Shafer vacated his position, the Greater Starkville Development Partnership is looking to fill that role.

CEO Jennifer Gregory said the Partnership was accepting resumes and hoped to have someone in place by the end of August. In the interim, she said, various members of the GSDP staff had absorbed duties.

US Supreme Court strikes VRA section 4

The United States Supreme Court on Monday struck down a provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Court, in a 5-4 ruling, threw out Section 4 of the act, which used a formula to designate what parts of the country had to have changes made to their voting laws cleared by the federal government. Section 5 of the VRA gave the federal government the ability to approve or deny any changes.
