Alex Detz had every intention to attend Oregon State and play baseball for the Beavers. 
A friendship with a Mississippi State baseball player was developed two summers ago for Detz.

Indians anxious to resume play in baseball

It has been a week and a half since the Ackerman Indians have played a baseball game.
The weather could make that wait even longer.
The second round Class 2A playoff series between the Indians and Loyd Star is scheduled to start today at 5 p.m. in Ackerman, but there is more rain in the forecast.

Miss. St. rugby team to assist GED students

For Randy Pannell, rugby and community service go hand-in-hand.

Pannell is one of the lead coaches for Mississippi State University's rugby club — he handles organization where fellow coach Renaldo Arroyo handles the game itself — and he said he had kept a service element in the club since he took the position in 2007. He said other rugby teams in other countries had a history of service.

County Relay for Life kicks off Friday

Cancer doesn’t sleep, and neither do they.

At least, that’s the idea for the 2013 Oktibbeha County Relay for Life. The annual event — themed “Up All Night” — will begin at 5 p.m. Friday with a survivor reception in the activities room at the Starkville Sportsplex before kicking off the evening’s activities at 6.

Stabbing suspect sought

Starkville police are searching for a man suspected in an April 26 stabbing.

According to an SPD press release issued on Tuesday, authorities have issued an arrest warrant for 34-year-old Travis Lavon Seymore on suspicion of aggravated assault-use of a deadly weapon. Seymore reportedly stabbed a victim multiple times in the back, neck and ear.

Mayoral candidates square off in debate

Hot-button topics in this year’s city elections rose to the surface with vigor during Tuesday’s Starkville Mayoral Debate in the Greensboro Center. While some generated more subdued debate, others evoked far more aggressive responses.

Bulldogs to host men's tennis regional

Mississippi State's men's tennis team won't have to travel to compete in the postseason for the second-straight season.

Jackets beat Chargers 6-5 in baseball

OXFORD – Three Starkville High School pitchers kept the Oxford Charger bats at bay long enough for the Yellowjackets to go on the road and get the second-round Class 5A playoffs series started on the right note.
Max Bartlett, Tanner Jones and Tanner Clanton of SHS combined to hold Oxford to seven hits on its home field and the Jackets came away with a 6-5 victory on Tuesday night.

SA drops first game of baseball series

GREENVILLE – The Starkville Academy Volunteers have their game faces on as it prepares for game two of the MAIS AAA-II baseball playoffs.
After dropping game one by a score of 3-1 to Washington School, the Vols look for more production on Thursday than they did in Tuesday's first outing.
