Starkville set to host 70-team baseball tournament in June: Three-day event could make significant economic impact

When it came to one of the biggest tourism events of the summer, Starkville didn’t strike out.

The Starkville Sportsplex will become the site of the next big event in youth league baseball, when the 82 Challenge holds its statewide United States Specialty Sports Association tournament for 11-year-old players from June 20-23.

Bridges Out of Poverty to host soiree at Hunter Henry Center

Starkville Bridges Out of Poverty will invite friends and supporters to join it at a summer soiree on Thursday at the Hunter Henry Center at Mississippi State University.

Katie Lewis, a liaison for Starkville Bridges, explained the soiree is a fundraising event to help Bridges continue carrying on its mission.

Board to name consolidation reps for SSD

Starkville School District’s Board of Trustees will name the district’s three representatives on the seven-member commission to study consolidation at its meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Greensboro Center.

It's a tie! Ward 2 alderman race comes down to May 21 runoff

A day dedicated to declaring a winner in the Starkville Ward 2 alderman race achieved the exact opposite on Monday.

The Democratic Municipal Election Committee approved, opened and counted six affidavit ballots just after noon on Monday at City Hall, and the results actually tied the Democratic primary between incumbent Sandra Sistrunk and Lisa Wynn at 181 votes each.

MSU hosts Oral Roberts

Mississippi State's midweek game today will feature a couple of firsts.
Sophomore right hander Trevor Fitts is expected to make his first start for the No. 23 (Collegiate Baseball) Bulldogs as they take on Oral Roberts for the first time in program history. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Dudy Noble Field.

Becker, Cooley, other Bulldogs extend season

The senior years of Jessica Cooley and Stephanie Becker were hanging in the balance Sunday night.
After finishing the regular season with a 32-22 record and not being able to participate in the Southeastern Conference Tournament, Cooley and Becker were left wondering if their softball careers with the Mississippi State Bulldogs was over.

Yellowjackets ready for challenge at State

Only one stop remains on Starkville High’s “road to the ring.”
That stop begins this afternoon as a dozen Yellowjacket tennis players descend on the Ridgeland Tennis Center for the opening matches of the Class 5A Individual State championship tournament.

East Webster claims Class 2A North title

BALDWYN – East Webster coach Lee Berryhill knew the importance of carrying a one game lead into Monday’s contest with Baldwyn. 
As the game ended, that advantage proved beneficial as the Lady Wolverines advanced to the Class 2A State championship after defeating the Lady Bearcats 5-3 in game two.

Whit Lenoir

Whitman Hill Lenoir, 83, a true southern gentleman, passed away at the Care Center of Aberdeen on Saturday, May 11, 2013. He was born October 3, 1929, in Aberdeen to Sterling Payne Lenoir and Emma Mangum Lenoir. He lived most of his life in Aberdeen, but moved to Starkville, for eight years in 2000. He was a fourth generation owner and farmer of the family owned Lenoir Plantation in Prairie, MS.
