There's no denying the size of the heart of the Starkville Academy Volunteers.
Anyone who witnessed last Saturday night's 67-65 victory in three overtimes over Washington School could tell the Vols still had much fight left in them.
The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers have their sights set on winning another trophy after claiming the Class AAA, Division II State championship last Saturday.
With its tradition of playing good basketball at this time of the year, Jackson Prep stands in the way of the Lady Vols at Jackson Academy today. The two teams play in the first round of the Class AAA Tournament at 4 p.m.
COLUMBUS – It was a steep mountain for the Starkville High School girls' basketball team to climb.
The Lady Yellowjackets comeback fell short, as the New Hope Lady Trojans beat SHS 67-47 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
MATHISTON – The rain that began falling on the outside of the gym where East Webster plays its home basketball games was a fitting omen.
Shots had been raining down all night long for the Lady Wolverines on Monday.
MSU head coach Rick Ray took the podium Monday afternoon at the Humphrey Coliseum, with some more big news for the Bulldog basketball team.
He announced that sophomore forward Roquez Johnson was suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.
"Roquez Johnson has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules," Ray said.

Mrs. Myra Loretta Browning of Starkvile, 78, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 in Delta Heights Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Cleveland with Rev. Barry Dickerson officiating.
Ray Funeral Home of Cleveland is in charge of arrangements.

Lease options regarding the county’s portion of Oktibbeha County Lake and a resolution to support consolidation of Starkville and Oktibbeha County schools will be two discussion topics in today’s board of supervisors meeting, officials say.
The 5:30 p.m. meeting will be held at the Oktibbeha County Courthouse.

JACKSON (AP) — Supporters say bills to guarantee religious freedom in Mississippi public schools are meant to ensure students can talk about spiritual beliefs and aren’t deprived of their rights.
But some supporters also say the measures would legalize prayer before school audiences, and that makes people who advocate for separation of church and state uneasy.
