Stratton throws out first pitch at MSU game

Chris Stratton found himself in a familiar position Friday afternoon.

The Tupelo native was standing on the mound at Dudy Noble Field to throw a pitch.

With his career with the Mississippi State Bulldogs complete, one toss was all he got Friday as he threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the series opener against University of Portland.

Lady Vols reach tourney finals

JACKSON – Starkville Academy’s girls are one step away from being Class AAA, Division II State champions after defeating Hillcrest Christian in the semifinals 79-37 on Friday.

“We had a good one,” Starkville Academy coach Glenn Schmidt said. “It was a huge team effort. We had five players in double figures and two with double rebounds. Everybody really came together and we pulled it off.”

Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Webster County.
Visitation will be held 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at the church prior to services.

SHS girls drop 58-51 decision to Canton

CANTON – It wasn't the type of start that the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets were looking for, but the finish was more to their liking.

Even though the Lady Jackets lost a 58-51 decision to homestanding Canton in the finals of the Class 5A, Region 3 Tournament, they came back to make a run, only to see it fall a bit short.

Wireless technology to be on gas meters

Starkville Electric Department finished the first phase of its fiber optic network installation in December, which will allow for customers to monitor their use of electricity. In the coming months, many Starkville residents will also be able to monitor their gas usage when the installation of a similar system is complete.

UPDATE: Club shooting suspect identified

Lowndes County deputies have identified a suspect in connection to a fatal shooting at a club near the Oktibbeha-Lowndes county line just after midnight Thursday.

Ronagal Lamar Outlaw II, 17, of 1859 Stowood Road faces one count of murder in connection to the death of 23-year-old Starkville resident Trumaine Macon and is being held at Lowndes County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
