Museum's open house to honor hall of famers

Sunday will be a special time for the families of three local athletes who all consider Starkville their home and have gone on to become hall of famers in their respective professional sports.
The Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum plans to memorialize Bailey Howell, James Thomas "Cool Papa" Bell and Jerry Rice for their contributions on the national stage.

Not missing a beat: Horsley battles back from injury to help Jackets

He may be a soft-spoken individual during the week, but on Friday nights, Jacquez Horsley lets his action speak loudly on the football field for the Starkville High School Yellowjackets.
After hurting his knee and ankle on the first offensive play for SHS against Northwest Rankin, Horsley's availability for the next game against Greenville-Weston was in question.

Trio productive for Volunteers

Three is the magic number when it comes to running backs at Starkville Academy.
One might think that to be a starter for the Volunteers, the trio of senior O'Shea Kemp and sophomores Grant Wolfe and Noah Heflin had been playing the position all their lives, but aside from Wolf that is very far from the truth.

SA Vols say good things about game

It was refreshing to hear some of the comments from Starkville Academy after last Friday's game against French Camp.
Even though the Volunteers lost a 17-13 decision to the Panthers, they came away from the experience with a respect for the Choctaw County school.
"Well-played" and "clean" game were words used by some of the Starkville Academy people about what took place.

East Webster advances in playoffs

MABEN – Going into Tuesday’s slow-pitch softball playoffs, East Webster coach Lee Berryhill knew his team had to be on top of its game as one off day could send them packing.
The Lady Wolverines took that charge and ran with it as they rallied after losing game one 6-3 to defeat Union 13-0 and 13-7, respectively, to claim the best-of-three series and advance forward in the Class 2A postseason.

Lady Jackets end season with a win

Senior Vivian Barksdale and the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets were determined not to lose a set to the New Hope Lady Trojans Tuesday night.
Even after getting down 12-4 at one point of the third set, the Lady Jackets fought back and won 27-25.
That set clinched the match against New Hope as Starkville won the first two sets by the same 25-15 scores.

Bulldog tight end Johnson picked to Mackey watch list

The Mississippi State football team had another player be recognized for his efforts on the field on Tuesday.
Junior tight end Malcolm Johnson was one of 29 players nationwide to make the 2013 John Mackey midseason watch list.

OCH expects $1.6M deficit in ‘13 - CEO says hospital can weather storm

OCH Regional Medical Center CEO Richard Hilton said Monday that the health care industry was facing the “perfect storm,” specifically referring to the unknown impact the Affordable Care Act will have on health care providers.

Though he said OCH would not escape unscathed from the volatile waves that storm promises, he claimed the local hospital could weather it.

Board to discuss drainage contract

The Starkville Board of Aldermen will consider approving a contract with a Starkville-based firm for a sewage expansion job in the southwest corner of the city at today’s meeting.

Doug Devlin, director of public services for the city, said the project aimed to provide sewer service to unserved residents and commercially-zoned land in an are that the city annexed in 1998.
