MSU, Ole Miss unite to incentivize teaching

Mississippi State University and University of Mississippi leaders announced plans Tuesday at the Institutions of Higher Learning Universities Center in Jackson to use a $12.9 million private gift to launch the Mississippi Excellence in Teaching (MET) program, aimed at attracting top students to middle and high school teaching careers.

SHS girls advance in playoffs

Caroline Berryhill left quite the impression as the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets celebrated senior night with a first round playoff battle against the Lady Chargers of Oxford.

The SHS senior scored two goals, including the final score of the night, to push the Lady Jackets to a 4-0 victory.

After the game Berryhill expressed what it means to be nearing the close of her senior year.

As far as SA coach Robert Gardner is concerned, all someone has to do is look at Tuesday night's second half against East Rankin Academy.

The Volunteers were locked in a 1-1 battle at halftime, but scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half and went on to a 5-1 victory at the Starkville Sportsplex.

Starkville drops pair to Columbus

On Tuesday night, The Starkville High Yellowjackets were defeated by Columbus Falcons in overtime 70-62.

With the Jackets leading heading into the final moments, Jalen Stewart hit a last second shot to tie the game at 58 as time expired. Columbus would then take control of the extra period to come away with the win.

Caleb Wilson lead Starkville in scoring with 15 points.

Strong shooting keeps Lady Vols season perfect

The East Rankin Lady Patriots came to Starkville Academy on Tuesday, hoping to escape with an upset over one of the best teams in the state.

However, for coach Glenn Schmidt and the Lady Volunteers, it was business as usual and they defeated East Rankin 68-34 to remain unbeaten.

Even when he's not scoring, Jordan finds other ways to help the Cougars.

Jordan scored his only two points of the game with 7 minutes remaining in Tuesday's game against the Meridian Flyers, but he continued to hustle and encourage his SCS teammates down the stretch.
