SA Lady Vols pick off Pillow at home 40-25

January 21, 2012

It was only fitting that Friday night's girls game against Pillow Academy ended with a steal by the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers.

The defense displayed by the Lady Vols was instrumental in picking up a 40-25 victory over the Lady Mustangs at the SA gymnasium.

"It was as good a defense as we've played all year," Starkville Academy girls coach Glenn Schmidt said. "I don't think either one of us played particularly well offensively, but I think it's because of pretty good defense."

Senior point guard Anna Prestridge said the Lady Vols did place special emphasis on defense in practice this week.

Mobley, Ware help SHS turn back Canton

January 21, 2012

The Starkville High School Yellowjackets received a performance from the usual cast.

Jacolby Mobley and Gavin Ware helped the Jackets turn away the Canton Tigers 77-56 in the Beehive Friday night.

SHS improved to 16-3 this season thanks to the intensity on both ends of the floor.

“That’s something we talked about coming into the game,” said Head Coach Greg Carter of the Jackets. “They were going to play fast and we like that tempo. We wanted to make a special effort to get out and run. In the first half, we ran really well but we missed some opportunities too.”

Bulldogs go back on the road

January 21, 2012

The 18th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs travel to ‘Music City’ tonight to face the Vanderbilt Commodores following a disappointing 75-68 loss to in-state rival Ole Miss.

Nashville, Tenn., was the site of the most recent football success for MSU after winning the Music City Bowl against Wake Forest in December.

For the Bulldogs to pull off a Southeastern Conference win there in basketball against the Commodores, they’ll have to deal with Memorial Gymnasium, one of the more unique settings in college basketball.

“There’s no question Vanderbilt is one of the more difficult places to play in the country,” said MSU coach Rick Stansbury, who is 10-8 all-time against the Commodores. “That setup makes it very difficult, but you know that going in. But more than the setup is the fact Vanderbilt is a very good team. It’s going to be a challenge.”

SHS teams sweep New Hope

January 21, 2012

The Starkville High School girls' soccer team was able to get a much needed Class 5A, Region 3, District 4 victory Friday on senior night.

The Lady Yellowjackets shut out the New Hope Lady Trojans 3-0 to win and take first place in the district.

The Lady Trojans won the first match up between the two teams on Wednesday 2-1 at home. SHS head coach Anna Albritton did not change her gameplan much, but did tweak it a little bit.
