With Christmas a little over a month away, it appears that Santa is going to be very good to Mississippi State defensive back and former East Webster player Johnthan Banks.

Banks was chosen as one of three finalists for the 2012 Jim Thorpe Award on Monday. The award annual goes to the top defensive back in college football.

Mattox finds ways to stay motivated

Starkville's Kate Mattox has always found ways to be motivated in an athletic competition.

When she was 10-years-old, Mattox was seeded eighth in the breast stroke for the state swimming championships and was supposed to finish last.

There's one twist to the story.

The meet was being held in Oxford, the home of the University of Mississippi.

MSU student in Wash. jail after shotgun threat

A Mississippi State University student reported missing last week is in custody of the Connell Police Department in Connell, Wash., after he was charged Saturday with second degree assault and possession of an unlawful weapon for allegedly threatening a police officer with a shotgun.

The Egg Bowl is very important to the fans from Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

It all comes down to bragging rights and being able to hold your head up high when you see a fan from the opposing team.

For recruits, MSU football coach Dan Mullen doesn't think the game sways their decision one way or the other.

Starkville Academy wins pair at Oak Hill

WEST POINT - The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers claimed a 58-52 victory over the Oak Hill Lady Raiders in what turned out to be a closely-contested game.

In the end, Starkville Academy outscored the Lady Raiders by six to continue its perfect season. The Lady Vols improved to 7-0.

Multipurpose building at MSU to alter traffic

Significant changes are coming to traffic at the heart of the Mississippi State University campus to accommodate a new building that will combine a parking garage at its bottom with classrooms on upper floors.

Rudy Johnson, Golden Triangle Planning and Development District’s executive director, gave his blessing Monday for Oxford-based urban planning firm Slaughter & Associates to handle developing a comprehensive plan for Oktibbeha County.

Supervisors could approve the agreement at their first meeting in December.
