Starkville vs. Oxford: Towns that MSU, Ole Miss call home meet on prep level

The Battle for the Golden Egg between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Ole Miss Rebels doesn't happen for another week.

Prior to the renewal of that college series on the gridiron, the two towns that those institutions call home have high schools teams that play in the postseason tonight.

In a repeat of an earlier regular season game, the Eupora Eagles and the Calhoun City Wildcats are set to square off tonight in third round Class 2A gridiron action.

In what is certain to be an electric matchup, the Eagles and Wildcats are set to kickoff at 7 p.m. in Calhoun City.

Jackets split with Rockets at home lanes

Bulldog Lanes in Starkville was the site of the season home opener for the Starkville High bowling teams, as the Yellowjackets split 6-6 with opponent Neshoba Central.

“I thought our team did good,” SHS bowling coach Jim Philamlee said. “I was especially impressed with their attitude about competition.”

The Jackets split their day with the Rockets as each team won three of the six frames.

Starkville High School moves back to Class 6A

Starkville High School received word on Thursday that it would once again be a part of the 6A classification, beginning with the 2012-13 school year.

For the last two years, the Yellowjackets have competed athletically in Class 5A and won the All-Sports trophy for that class last year.

Lady Vols knock off Lady Patriots

In midweek action the Starkville Academy Lady Vols claimed a 46-37 victory over the Jackson Prep Lady Patriots.

“We came out ready to play,” Starkville Academy coach Glenn Schmidt said.

In what was a toughly fought battle, the Lady Vols shot 51.5% as they continued their quest for a perfect season moving their record to 6-0 overall and 1-0 divisionally,
