Starkville community members will get their first taste of the Halloween season as the Greater Starkville Development Partnership hosts the fourth annual Pumpkinpalooza Friday from 6-8 p.m. on Main Street.

Biden likely to play tough against Ryan

WASHINGTON — Four years ago, Joe Biden was careful not to appear overly aggressive in his vice presidential debate with Sarah Palin, then a newcomer to the national stage.

Now, as he prepares to debate Paul Ryan, a 14-year House veteran and the top Republican budget writer, Biden is less concerned about looking like a bully.

Griffith to exit city planning job next week

Ben Griffith confirmed Tuesday he will leave his position as Starkville’s city planner on Oct. 18 after a six-year tenure.

Starkville's Mitchell preparing for Mississippi-Alabama Game

Starkville High School head football coach Jamie Mitchell takes pride in meeting any challenge with dedication and hard work.

There has been more than usual on Mitchell's plate this season.

Along with trying to mold the Yellowjackets into state championship contenders in Class 5A, Mitchell also has the responsibility of getting ready to coach in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game.

Winston Academy has improving football team

The Winston Academy Patriots have done a lot of improving over the past season.

They have a new head coach in Bo Milton who came from Parklane Academy.
The Patriots (3-4) look to get to .500 this season when they travel to Starkville to take on the Volunteers of Starkville Academy (4-4, 2-2).
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on homecoming weekend for the Volunteers.

Mullen not surprised former player getting chance with Colts

Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen really wasn't surprised to hear that one of his former players was expected to get his first start in the National Football League this weekend.

Due to injuries in the Indianapolis Colts backfield this season, former Bulldog Vick Ballard has been given the starting nod for Sunday's game against the New York Jets.

State record 10 years in making for Jordan

It was an accomplishment that's been 10 years in the making.

When Dakota Jordan bowled an 875 series at Bulldog Lanes last week, the total was good enough to set a state record.

Jordan, a student at Mississippi State, began bowling when he was 10-years-old. There were two bowling houses near his home in Perlington, close to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and another in Slidell, La.

Starkville native reveals sushi secrets in new book

Starkville native Marisa Baggett is on a mission to bring the art of sushi-making into the average home with her new book, "Sushi Secrets: Easy Recipes for the Home Cook."

A graduate of Starkville High School, Baggett began her culinary career at the age of 22 when she opened The Chocolate Giraffe, a restaurant and catering company.

You might need to use your imagination a little bit — you might need to think outside the box — but that’s not always a bad thing. Neither is lunch at the fair.

Try to lighten up your cooking

— Keep it low in fat. Measure your cooking oils, don’t just pour them freely. Oils are very calorie dense. Use a non-stick skillet to further reduce the fat you use.

— Go very light on the cheese. Opt for small amounts of flavorful cheeses like Parmesan or Romano. Use fat-free ricotta in place of regular ricotta cheese.
